What is Bloating?
Bloating is a feeling of fullness, tightness, or distension in the abdomen due to excessive gas, indigestion, or sluggish digestion. It may occur after meals, along with burping, heaviness, or irregular bowel movements. Ayurveda calls this condition Adhmana or Ajeerna — a disturbance of digestive fire (Agni) and Vata imbalance in the abdomen.
Common Causes & Symptoms
- Irregular eating habits, overeating or eating incompatible foods.
- Stress, lack of sleep, or sedentary lifestyle slowing digestive fire.
- Symptoms: gas, burping, heaviness, pain, constipation or irregular appetite.
Ayurvedic Understanding
In Ayurveda, bloating arises from disturbed Samana Vata and weakened Agni. This leads to formation of Ama (undigested residue), gas accumulation and obstruction in abdominal channels (Srotas). The approach involves clearing Ama, balancing Vata, kindling digestion and restoring gut motility through mild detox and toning therapies.
Ayurvedic Approach to Healing Bloating
- Deepana & Pachana: Use of digestive and carminative herbs to reignite Agni and digest Ama.
- Snehana & Swedana: Mild oleation (oil massage) and steam therapy to relax abdominal muscles and clear channels.
- Basti therapy: Medicated enema to balance Vata and restore proper bowel movement.
- Diet correction: Warm, freshly cooked food; avoid carbonated drinks, raw salads, and cold meals.
- Lifestyle: Regular meal timing, gentle yoga, pranayama and stress reduction.
